Every chair in the house was taken at our first event of 2018: Broken Promises: Resolutions, Riots, and Repair with poet Susan Landgraf and novelist (plus world-famous librarian) Nancy Pearl taking the stage. Both women, on the other side of 50, have taken leaps into new arenas: for Landgraf she has published her first full-length book of poetry and for Pearl, her first novel just hit the bookshelves. In addition to our readers, WordsWest hosted memoir writer and novelist Allison Green to read her Favorite Poem ("Astrohearts" by Elba Rosario Sánchez) and talk a little bit about Hedgebrook - an organization that amplifies the voices of women writers located on Whidbey Island. All of the authors had spent time at Hedgebrook and mentioned the importance of having a dedicated space and time, along with Hedgebrook's radical hospitality to sustain them. Finally, our event was dedicated to the owners of C & P Coffee Company, Cam and Peter Moores who offer us an amazing space each month. The landlords of C & P are selling the building and the community is fighting to keep the heart of our neighborhood safe.
